HISTORY:
Discovered by Christopher
Columbus in 1493, the island has played an important part in history due
to the natural harbour at English Harbour and the deep water facilities
at St John's. Admiral Nelson sheltered his fleet in English Harbour whilst
patrolling the Caribbean prior to crossing the Atlantic to win the Battle
of Trafalgar.
THE ISLAND:
By virtue of her geographical
position and the continuing development of her human and natural resources,
it may be seen that Antigua may reasonably be seen as 'the heart of the
Caribbean'.
With an area of approximately
108 square miles, about 900 miles of coastland and no fewer than 365 beaches.
Antigua has a population of approximately 75,000. Some of the beaches
rank among the finest in the Caribbean and thus in the World.
CLIMATE:
The daily temperature
varies between 24°C (76°F) and 30°C (86°F) all year round,
with an annual rainfall of 42 inches. This, combined with a constant easterly
breeze and comparatively low humidity creates a most healthy climate and
the ideal tropical paradise.
